Process control system: IT system to support the production processes with a focus on the process engineering sequences, e.g. in a large chemical plant. The functionality essentially includes control and regulation functions for components of the plant (e.g. actuators/controllers), data acquisition in real time (e.g. from sensors including visualisation for the operator) and alarm functions. In addition, they usually also enable storage of the recorded data and offer additional evaluation functions. In Anglo-Saxon countries, the systems are often referred to as DCS (distributed control system) or PCS (process control system).
