A survey by laboratory supplies manufacturer Starlab reveals how employees in the laboratory sector view the topic of AI, what opportunities they see, and where their greatest concerns lie.
63 percent of respondents believe that AI is becoming increasingly relevant in laboratories. Only 25 percent disagree with this statement. The industry tends to be open-minded and optimistic about the topic. For instance, 67 percent view AI as an opportunity and only 33 percent as a risk.
Efficiency, cost savings, and assistance in solving complex problems are some of the benefits that lab employees see. In this way, digitalization could help alleviate some of the biggest problems in the lab: staff shortages and rising prices for consumables.
Concerns primarily revolve around data security and the lack of sufficient legal regulation, but there are also ethical concerns.
They see the most important areas of application as assistance with data analysis and pattern recognition, image analysis and pathology, as well as robotics, automation, and molecular modeling.
