A survey by laboratory supplies manufacturer Starlab shows how employees in the laboratory sector view the topic of AI, what opportunities they see and where they are most concerned.
63 percent of those surveyed believe that AI is becoming increasingly relevant in laboratories. Only 25 percent disagree with this statement. The industry tends to be open-minded and optimistic about the topic. For example, 67% see AI as an opportunity and only 33% as a risk.
Efficiency, cost savings and help in solving complex problems are some of the benefits that laboratory employees see. Digitalization could therefore help to alleviate some of the biggest problems in the laboratory: Staff shortages and rising prices for consumables.
There are concerns primarily about data security and the lack of sufficient legal regulation, but there are also ethical concerns.
They see help with data analysis and pattern recognition, image analysis and pathology, as well as robotics, automation and molecular modeling as the most important areas of application.
